Ask Gandy Orthodontics and Dr. Gandy

Dr. Allen Gandy wants to give you as much information as possible about our services and treatments so you can make an educated decision about your teeth. That’s why we have posted some of our most commonly asked questions below. If you still have questions, call our practice at 972-712-9300 so we can help you.

What age should my child receive an orthodontic evaluation?

Dr. Gandy wants to see your child at 7 years of age or older. By this age, many of your child’s permanent teeth have come in, they’ve out-grown any finger sucking habits, and their jaw has grown enough so Dr. Gandy can detect possible problems.

During their visit, he will perform an orthodontic evaluation on your child to see how their adult teeth are developing. He will also check their tooth spacing to see if there’s enough room in their jaws without crowding the teeth. From there, Dr. Gandy will discuss if orthodontics are appropriate for your child. To schedule a complementary comprehensive orthodontic exam for you or your child, call us at 972-712-9300 today!

How much will orthodontic treatment cost?

Since each mouth is unique, the cost will ultimately depend on the complexity and length of the treatment.

We accept most orthodontic insurance plans and will even file the forms for you. We accept payment at the time of your visit and you can pay amounts not covered by your insurance with cash, check, and credit cards, such as Master Card, Visa, or American Express. We also offer 0% interest financing through our office. For more information on financing, contact our office at 972-712-9300.

When I have braces, what can I eat?

Your braces are durable, but keep in mind that they are not permanent. Only a small amount of cement is holding them in place. That’s why Dr. Gandy advises patients to avoid any foods that are hard, sticky, or sweet. Hard foods, such as nuts, chips, and peanut brittle, or sticky foods, such as gum or caramel can destroy the brackets and the wire, and lengthen the time of your treatment. Sweet, sugary foods make your braces harder to clean and can cause stains or cavities.

Will wearing braces hurt?

Years ago, the initial application of braces used to be a trying experience. Thankfully, dental technology has made it easier and more painless to have braces applied to your teeth. Children and adolescents may experience some soreness for a day or two after the tightening, but Dr. Gandy can recommend over-the-counter pain-relievers to ease their discomfort. For irritated or raw gums and cheeks, he can give you wax to ease your pain.

When I wear braces, how should I brush?

Dr. Gandy recommends using a soft bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste to clean your teeth. You should brush after every meal, but if you cannot brush, rinse your mouth with water. At least once a day, you should brush and floss until your teeth and braces are spotless. During this cleaning, concentrate on polishing the space between your braces and gums.

Our staff will show you how to brush and care for your braces after your appointment. If you have any problems or questions, call us at 972-712-9300.
